Mental Health Care Plans (MHCP) FAQs

What is a Mental Health Care Plan?

It is a document that your GP writes with you about treating a mental health condition. It identifies what type of health care you will require and details what you and your doctor have agreed you are aiming to achieve.

Do I need a Mental Health Care Plan to get treatment?

No, it is not needed to get treatment. We offer treatments with both counsellors and psychologists with or without a Mental Health Care Plan.

How do I get a Mental Health Care Plan?

You will have to obtain a Mental Health Care plan from your GP. Mosh at this time is not able to facilitate creating Mental Health Care Plans.

Is the price different if I don’t have one?

Yes, if you do not have a Mental Health Care Plan the price will be:

  • Counsellors - $65/session (note that Counsellors are not available to book with a MHCP)
  • Psychologist - from $150/session.
What if I don’t want to get a Mental Health Care Plan, or don’t have one?

No worries, you can book in with a counsellor for $65 or get a MHCP and upload it within 48 hours to claim back a through Medicare ($93.35 rebate for a registered psychologist, $137.05 rebate for a clinical psychologist). Medicare rebates are not available for counsellor appointments.

You can also email your plan to [email protected].

From 1 November 2025, new Mental Health Care Plans must be prepared by your regular GP or usual practice.

You can still book a psychology session with Mosh — but without a plan, you’ll need to pay the full fee (no Medicare rebate).

With a MHCP, you can access up to 10 subsidised sessions each year and save $90+ per session.

*You can choose to see a psychologist outside Mosh.
Telehealth is not suitable for everyone. Your doctor or therapist may recommend that you see someone in person if it’s more appropriate for your care.

Mental Health Care Plans (MHCP) FAQs

A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a plan prepared by your GP that outlines your mental health needs and goals. It allows you to access up to 10 Medicare-subsidised psychology sessions per calendar year under the Better Access program.

No, you don’t need one to start treatment — but without a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and GP referral, your session won’t be eligible for a Medicare rebate. You can still book a psychology session privately and pay the full fee.

Book an appointment with your regular GP or the practice you’re registered with under MyMedicare. They’ll assess your mental health, create a plan, and give you a referral to a psychologist (such as Mosh).

Yes. If you have a valid Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and GP referral, you can claim a Medicare rebate for each psychology session — usually saving around $90–$135 per session, depending on the psychologist type.

Without a MHCP and referral, your session won’t be subsidised by Medicare and you’ll pay the full session fee.

You don’t need a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) to access therapy through Mosh — anyone can book a session privately. However, without a MHCP and GP referral, your sessions won’t be subsidised by Medicare, so you’ll pay the full fee. A MHCP simply helps you save money by giving you access to up to 10 Medicare-rebated sessions per calendar year.
